If you are not a citizen and want to work in the United States, you will need one of the following three documents: Each of the three documents listed above has a different application process as well as different requirements, which means you need to determine which document is best for your situation. If you`re not sure what document to get or want to make sure you don`t choose the wrong document and pay more than you need, an experienced immigration attorney can help you with this process. The documents on List A contain both the identity and the work permit. Staff members who provide an acceptable List A document should not be asked to provide another document. Some documents in List A are actually a combination of 2 or more documents. In this case, the documents submitted together are counted as a single document in List A. NOTE: These must be original documents. Photocopies will not be accepted. In order for a non-citizen to work in the United States, you must prove to your employer that you are legally allowed to work here.
A green card, work permit document or employment-related visa serves as necessary proof for a non-citizen. Some work authorization documents issued by DHS include, but are not limited to, Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record, which is issued to eligible refugee claimants or nonimmigrants (e.g., H-1B nonimmigrants) based on their immigration status, Form I-571, Refugee Travel Document (PDF), an unexpired Form I-327, Reentry Permit, Form N-560, Certificate of U.S. Citizenship, or Form N-561, Replacement Certificate of Citizenship (PDF, 40.3 KB) or Form N-550, Certificate of Naturalization or Form N-570, Certificate of Naturalization (PDF, 176.3 KB). A Form I-797 issued at conditional residence, combined with its expired Form I-551, may be an acceptable Schedule C document. The I-9 contact form can help you answer questions about DHS-issued documents. Employers are required by federal law to verify that anyone hired after November 6, 1986 is eligible to work in the United States by using the Verification of Employment Eligibility Form (Form I-9). If you are a new employee, you will need to provide documents that identify you and confirm your eligibility to work in that country, and complete a Form I-9. Your department can help you complete Form I-9 and other forms, including the University Confirmation Form and the W-4 Tax Deduction Form, which must be completed and signed no later than the first day of your employment. These forms must be completed and submitted before you start working for the university, and must be submitted to the human resources department before the university can issue you a paycheck.
You can download Form I-9 and others from the Human Resources Department website, or fill out the forms in the Human Resources Department if you are convenient. Non-resident aliens must complete their W-4 forms at the Department of Human Resources to ensure compliance with Internal Revenue Service regulations. Examples of many of these documents can be found in Part 13 of the Employers` Handbook (M-274). This document may only be used if the validity period has not yet expired and the proposed employment does not conflict with the restrictions listed on Form I-94 or I-94A, Arrival-Departure Record. Note: Some individuals submitting this Annex A document, such as certain non-immigrant students and exchange visitors, are required to provide additional documentation to prove their work permit in the United States. Under current law, all employers must verify that each of their employees, regardless of citizenship status or national origin, is authorized to work in the United States. If you want to prove to your employer that you are legally allowed to work, obtaining a work permit (work permit) serves as proof. If an employer decides that the best candidate for a job at their company is a nonimmigrant who currently lives outside the United States, they must obtain an H1-B visa for them. The H1-b visa allows skilled workers to come to the United States without a green card or citizenship and work temporarily for a company. In order to complete the remainder of Form I-9, please gather the necessary documents to complete your Form I-9 no later than day one.
