Social Security Rights Victoria (SSRV) is a community legal centre that provides free legal services related to social security and central nexus issues to Victorians. The Welfare Rights Centre opened in 1983 as part of the Community Law Centre movement in Australia, which began in response to the lack of affordable legal aid for marginalized members of society. Originally merged with the Redfern Legal Centre, the centre opened its own premises in 1985. Since then, it has undergone changes in location, personnel, funding sources, legislation and policies. During these changes, the Welfare Rights Centre remained the primary service agency in New South Wales for social security legislation and policy. It is a human right of all people in need to an adequate level of income support, which is protected by law.
